I can’t believe the time has come . . . the time to talk with our oldest about growing up and how our bodies change as we grow and develop.
A few weeks ago, I met with my friend Tykee from church and she shared with me some of the special things she did with her daughter around this age. I took some of those and a few that Tom and I had and planned a very special afternoon for just Sage and I.
Below is what I did . . . written out mostly so that I remember for the next 2. 🙂
Tom took the girls out to the library for about a half hour while I set up our tea party.
Tom dropped Sage off and took the other two girls out for a couple hours.
When Sage got home, I told her about our afternoon and asked her to go get dressed up. I was already dressed up.
We sat down and I gave her a gift. In it was a picture frame with her 10 year old picture in it and the verse Phil 1:9-11. We talked about how this verse was what Tom and I desired for her and practically what that looked like. I also gave her a devotional book I had made for her to do in her bed at night. I have the book and am doing it as well so we can talk about it together.
Next we read 2 Tim. 2:21 and talked about purity and being set apart for God to use. The verse talks about keeping yourself pure to be a special utensil for honorable use. This is how I transitioned into a tea party using some beautiful china I borrowed from a friend.
After the tea party, we moved into the living room and talked about the part of the American Girl book that I had paper clipped shut. (She had already read the rest of it.) I also gave her a small little bag with a pantyliner and a thin pad to keep in her backpack.
Next we talked a little about modesty and read 1 Tim. 2:9-10. Nothing new here, but a good reminder and another chance to talk about how her body is going to start changing soon.
Lastly, we talked about how it is our desire as parents to help her make the transition from her world being all about her (as a child) to all about God.
Then we went and enjoyed having pedicures (and a manicure for Sage) at a local nail salon.
It was a very special day, one both of us will always remember. 🙂
